I'm in the habit of winding it all the way up before setting the time...this gives a longer ring. Plenty loud.
The other issue was that, even if it did start ticking, it got in the habit of stopping partway through the countdown. And in an unpredictable manner. Sometimes it would stop, sometimes it wouldn't. So much for reliability.
If I want to use this timer (which I don't at this point) I have to set it, listen for the ticking, and then hope I'm able to keep listening so that I catch if it stops mid-countdown. Not very useful.
I am looking into getting a vintage Lux timer, as I hear they are effective and long lasting. I am also looking into this as a 21st Century alternative. West Bend Digital Timer, White It seems simple to use. You don't need to hit a button 45 times to set the timer to 45 minutes. Other pros you can check out on the product page. I haven't purchased it, so that's about as much as I can vouch for it, but perhaps it will help you on your timer shopping journey.
As others have mentioned, you just have to be sure to always crank it around PAST the 30 minute mark even if you are doing less than 30 minutes. Just go around past the 30 minute mark and go counter-clockwise back to the number of minutes you want. It is just one loud ring but the nice thing about a portable timer is that you can take it in the living room, or whatever, and have it close by so that you can be sure to hear it.
I tested it a couple of times, setting a digital timer on my stove at the same time and they both went off at the EXACT same time. To tell the truth, I was surprised. All I expected of it was the it be close but it was right on, so I'm very pleased.
FWIW, I have the black one and, well, it's perfectly black so it goes with all my black kitchen stuff. It is not shiny. It is a lovely, satiny black.
I wondered if the faulty timer could be repaired. There is one screw in the housing that appeared to hold in the mechanism. I removed it, and the knob and innards fell out in my hand. Good so far.
Looking closely, I found two phillips head screws on the back of the metal shell that serves as housing and bell. I removed them carefully and exposed the clockwork mechanism and ringer hammer.
Next I sprayed the mechanism lightly with 3-IN-ONE 120070 Lock Dry Lube (search at Amazon; you'll find it).
I reassembled the mechanism, replaced it in the housing, cycled the timer a few times, and bumped it gently on the countertop to distribute the lubricant. It rings reliably and has remained good as new.
Inexpensive, made in China, but sturdy and not riveted together. I'd say it's a bargain.
